English
A cohesive approach to the teaching of English is used at Melbury school, where writing, reading and spoken language all feature in lessons planned around a core text. The timetable below shows the range of texts and genres studied.
There are five English sessions per week, which focus on reading and writing skills. Phonics, reading practice sessions, Close Reading, handwriting and spelling are in addition to the five lessons.
At Melbury, phonics underpins the application and early development of sound reading skills. Therefore, we ensure that it is taught in a structured format, enabling children to use and apply strategies across the curriculum. This is why we teach reading through Little Wandle Letters and Sounds Revised, which is a systematic and synthetic phonics programme.
